Judges in California Lobby Against Cuts
A group of California judges this week began lobbying against Gov. Jerry Brown's proposed cuts to state courts, in a campaign led by the chief justice of the state's Supreme Court.
Mr. Brown this month proposed cutting $544 million from the $3.6 billion annual budget of the state-court system as part of a plan to close a projected $16 billion state-budget shortfall. Mr. Brown plans to offset the cuts by delaying courthouse construction and dipping into court reserves, funds the judges say are largely committed to other purposes.
